SERIAN – St Theresa’s Parish Council successfully celebrated the Christmas season.
The celebration commenced with carolling in kampongs and Basic Catholic Community areas from 18-21 December. Children parties at Kpg Mantung Mera-u and Kpg Murud Plaman were held on 20 and 21 December respectively.
A big crowd of parishioners turned up for the Christmas Eve Mass in spite of the heavy rain before the Mass. Mass on Christmas Day was also crowded.
The Parish Council organised a Christmas and New Year Dinner on 28 December at the Church Hall with over 600 participants.
In his speech, Chairman of the Council’s Special Function Committee, John Jubang thanked the support and assistance from all the participants and, the members of the Committee
In his speech, the Chairman of the Parish Council, Dennis Sung, said that the Parish Council is to undertake to build the proposed Pastoral Centre with an estimated cost of RM 1.5 million to cater for the pastoral needs of the Parish. The building works delayed because the original site was not very suitable and has been used as a parking area for the time being. As the Council had decided that St Theresa’s Primary school, close to the Church, would be relocated, the Pastoral Centre Building Committee decided to build the Centre on this piece of land after the school had relocated. The sum collected so far is still far short of the required amount to build the centre.
The Parish Council is also entrusted to build the proposed St John’s Church in Simunjan sub-parish at an estimated cost of about RM600,000. The land and the plan for the church building have been approved by the relevant authorities and construction will commence in 2009.
The Parish Council is also focusing on many chapels in the Parish which were built many years ago and need repair, extension or rebuilding to cater for the increasing Catholic population of the areas.
Dennis appealed for the continued cooperation and financial support to achieve the goals of the Parish Council for God’s greater glory.
In his speech, the Rector of the Parish, Fr Augustine Jepy, thanked the parishioners for the strong support and cooperation so that 2008 was a smooth year. He congratulated the Parish Council for the efforts in 2008 to bring the five proposed major projects to fruition. These projects were the rectification and remedial works for the sunken-cracked ground floor and apron, filling the church’s frontage with earth, gravel, tar sealed and fitting security fencing and lighting, constructing new toilets, providing materials assistance to build or repair some kampong chapels on self-help basis, and repairing the roofing of the badminton court at the back of the Church.
Fr Jepy appealed for continuous support and donations for the Council so that the proposed projects 2009 could materialise in time.
He also touched on some points of care of family unity and urged parents to have more care, attention and love for their children.
