YOGYAKARTA – The 12th Asian Liturgy Forum – Southeast Asian Region (ALF) met from 24-29 October in Jayakarta Hotel.
This year’s ALF which was hosted by the Commission on Liturgy of the Bishops’ Conference of Indonesia and sponsored by the Archbishop of Samarang, had ‘The Inculturation of the Rite of Marriage’ for its theme. As is usual, the Conference Paper was delivered by Fr Anscar Chupungco, OSB, a well-known expert on Liturgy who is also Secretary of the ALF.
The Forum was attended by about 70 delegates from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Observers included Helen Reichl of Taiwan, Sr Carmel Pilcher of Australia and Fr Helle Jukka Antero of the Lutheran Church of Thailand.
After the Conference paper, the countries/regions gave reports on their local situations on inculturation of the marriage rite. Malaysia gave a total of five reports which included mixed Chinese (RC-Buddhist) marriage as well as traditional Indian, Iban, Bidayuh and Kadazan-Dusun marriages.
Eleven delegates from Malaysia attended the conference. They were led by Bishop Anthony Lee of Miri who is also the President of the ALF. Representing Kuching Archdiocese was Dr LL Chan who gave a presentation on the traditional Iban wedding.
As is usual, the ALF issued a statement based on the discussions on the theme at the end of the five-day meeting.
Next year’s ALF will be held in Manila.
