KUCHING – A new cemetery ground at Mile 7½ in front of the present Roman Catholic cemetery was bought and has been developed. It has 895 burial plots for adults and 238 plots for infants. The Catholic Cemetery Committee embarked on a ‘park’ concept where there will be no massive concrete structure but acres of green grass systematically lined with concrete footpath and drains.
The concept not only makes the new cemetery a pleasant and beautiful park, but is also going to save the bereaved family unnecessary expenditure. The thousands of dollars previously spent for a tomb, with elaborate tiling and big granite or marble tombstone can be saved. Only a small 15” x 24” headstone is needed. The rest would be just soil and grass. The bereaved family would still need to pay for the land and development cost per lot which remains at RM1,500. Digging would be RM150.
For those families still preferring traditional arrangements, a piece of ten-acre land at Mile 13 is being developed.
Meanwhile, the cemetery at St Joseph’s Cathedral Parish will soon have a new archway designed by award-winning architect parishioner, Gerald Law of Arkitek Pakatan Pertama. It took us five months to complete.
The unusual form of ups and downs of the arch resembles our life. There are two white marble angles reminding us of our guardian angels, guiding, protecting and leading us towards our Risen Lord, Jesus Christ. Across the arch is a quotation from John 11:25, “I am the Resurrection”. This reflects our Christian belief in eternal life.
