SIBU – 20 September marked another fund-raising event for building the Church in Betong, 275 km from Kuching. A golfing event was held at the Sibu Golf Club, inspired by the last fund-raising golfing event held in Kuching.
The event, which drew 68 golfers, had two grand prizes, a car and a house.
In his speech, the Chairman, Richard Song, thanked the golfers, the Sibu Golf Club, the Vice-President, the Captain and all the sponsors for helping the organising committee to make the event a success.
The building of the church in Betong is being overseen by the Parish of Our Lady Queen of Peace (Sri Aman). The Parish Priest, Fr Martin Wong, gave an account of the development of Betong Church.
About RM1.7 million is needed to complete the project. To date only around RM350,000 has been collected.
Fr Martin also told the golfers, “You enjoy golf, and every game takes at least four hours. You have a fabulous time, and it gives you some happiness. There is another place which can give you greater happiness and enjoyment, and that is your family.” He ended by praying for blessing and hope for every family.
This golf event help raised another RM106,890 for the Betong Church fund.
At the prize presentation, the ‘hole-in-one’ prize of a voucher to purchase a house was won by Lee Ka Tung. This voucher was sponsored by Joseph & Company. The gross champion was Lau Wang Ching, and the nett champions were Ting Heng Chiu and Wang Lung respectively.
The event ended with a fellowship and photo session. The golfers had an enjoyable time.
