KUALA LUMPUR – The Natural Family Planning Service of Malaysia was founded in Penang on 6 November 1983 by the delegates to the first National Natural Family Planning Seminar at which the then Apostolic Delegate, Archbishop Renato Martino, the then Archbishop Soter Fernandez of Kuala Lumpur and Bishop Antony Selvanayagam of Penang were present.
This year marks the Silver Jubilee of the organisation whose name was changed to Natural Fertility Awareness Service of Malaysia (NFASM) in 2003. This milestone is being celebrated at the local levels this year but the national level celebrations will be held in the later part of next year at the Biennial General Meeting in Penang.
The Kuala Lumpur branch of NFASM members celebrated the jubilee from 9-10 August in Bayu Beach Resort in Port Dickson. A whole day retreat was given by Fr Michael Raymond on 9 August. This was a joint activity with the Catholic Pharmacists Association of Malaysia (CPAM) which held its Annual General Meeting at the same weekend and venue.
Apart from the retreat, some topics were presented for information, reflection and discussion. These included ‘Wisdom of the Past, Strategy for the Future’ by Sir Richard Lai, one of the founding members of NFASM who is also active in the Catholic Nurses Guild. Dr Celine Pereira, a past President, spoke on ‘The History of NFASM’. NFASM Vice-President Dr LL Chan gave a presentation on ‘The Theology of the Body’ as well as a short presentation on two case-studies where insulin resistance and pituitary tumour respectively were diagnosed with the aid of their Billing Ovulation Method charts and how the charts were useful in monitoring recovery when treatment commenced.
Meanwhile, Kuching NFASM celebrated the Silver Jubilee on 13 July with a keynote presentation on ‘Natural Family Planning & the Harmonious Family’ by NFASM National Spiritual Advisor, Fr Joseph Chai. Other items included Dr LL Chan’s ‘Theology of the Body’ as well as reports on the NFP ministry from the various parishes.
