KUCHING – On 14 August, more than 500 well-wishers including religious Sisters, relatives and friends, came to bid farewell to Sr Laurentia Duro SSFS at the funeral Mass presided by Archbishop John Ha, concelebrated with Archbishop Emeritus Peter Chung and 11 priests. Thereafter, the burial service was conducted at the 7½ mile Catholic Cemetery by Fr Felix Au.
Sr Laurentia Duro was born on 6 December 1949. She joined the religious order of the Sisters of St Francis of Sarawak in January 1967 and made her first profession on 10 August 1969. She served in the Archdiocese of Kuching for 39 years. Most of her years were spent in St Joseph’s Convent, Serian.
Sr Laurentia was a simple and humble Sister. She served the community, especially the elderly and sick Sisters in her quiet and joyful manner. She was a loving ‘mother’ to nursery children as well as an obedient and diligent Sister. She never liked to be in the limelight but carried out her responsibilities faithfully.
She was in excellent health until she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. She accepted her illness with complete surrender to God. She received chemotherapy treatment faithfully and never complained. But the cancer was in the advanced stage and had spread to a lung. Even then, she remained cheerful and positive.
She received another course of chemotherapy as planned by the doctor. This time, her body could not withstand the treatment and got weaker each day. She still continued the treatment even though many people had advised her to abandon it but she was obedient to her doctor’s advice.
In the course of the treatment she was taken very ill and was admitted to Sarawak General Hospital on 12 August. She was conscious throughout and breathing heavily. At 1.50 am, in the stillness of the night, she returned to the Lord peacefully.
We thank God for the gift of Sr Laurentia to the Congregation and to the local Church. Her departure indeed is a great loss for us, especially for the Sisters of St Joseph’s Convent, Serian. We believe that because the good Lord loves her too much to let her suffer any longer, he has taken her to enjoy the eternal happiness.
“Come, you whom my Father has blessed, take for your heritage the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world” (Mt 25:34). May she rest in peace eternally.
