KUCHING – The Feast of St Elijah (Prophet of Carmel) on 20 July was a joyous and memorable day for the Secular Carmelites (OCDS) of Kuching. They rejoiced with their members who made their Definitive and Temporary Promises respectively in a beautiful Sunday Eucharist celebrated by their General Delegate, Fr Aloysius Deeney OCD, at the Carmelite Chapel.
Standing before Fr Aloysius, five members – Catherine Sim, Christopher Tan, Cynthia Lim, Jacqueline Sammy and Rosaline Liu – confidently made their Definitive Promise for the rest of their lives. They are the first batch to take the Promise after seven to eight years of formation and discernment. At the same Eucharist, another member, Janet Ling made her Temporary Promise for three years. It is always a moment of Grace when the Carmelite family (friars, nuns & secular lay people) meet at Eucharist for such an occasion.
In his homily, Fr Aloysius stressed on the second Reading of the day from the Letter of St Paul to the Romans (8:26-27) that the Holy Spirit is always there to help us in our weakness when we do not know how to pray. As prayer is an important part of the Carmelite vocation, Fr Aloysius assured that despite human weaknesses we can always rely on the help of the Holy Spirit.
Later in the afternoon, during the vespers (Evening Prayer), Fr Aloysius admitted four members – Annie Fong, Francis Munji ak Dupo, Monica Soon & Rosalind T’en – to the Novitiate for a period of two years.
The celebration ended with a sumptuous dinner at the Sarawak Club.
