– From 8-14 July, Fr Charles Serrao, OCD from Rome came to give the Carmelite Sisters an Annual Retreat on the Carmelite Charism. He also refreshed them on the three evangelical counsels of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience. It was a wholesome and spiritual enrichment.
Then, on the authorisation of Archbishop John Ha, Fr Angelo Madelo, OCD, a Definitor General from the Carmelite Generalate in Rome conducted the Pastoral Visitation from 21-26 July. This was an occasion for the Sisters to re-evaluate and re-focus their lives as Teresian Carmelites as well as on their apostolic contribution to the Church, especially the local Church. Such visitation included the personal interview of each Sister and also the general inspection of the Monastery.
Fr Angelo concluded that the Carmelite Community is a normal community with normal strengths and weaknesses. He was impressed by the great number of daily Mass attendants as well as the many people who go to pray in the Chapel during the day. The silence attracts them.
Fr Angelo was also very concerned about the wooden monastery which will not last for long, and he advised the Sisters to start looking for means to make a concrete building in ten years’ time, by setting aside some funds each month.
Archbishop Ha also delegated Fr Angelo to preside over the Triennium Elections which were carried out on 26 July. Fr Richard Ng was also present for the election of the Prioress.
The results of the elections are as follows:
Sr Mary John of the Cross
Sr Jovita of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
Sr Conception of the Holy Family
Sr Dominica of the Blessed Trinity
