SINGAPORE – On 12 June, six Sisters from the Sisters of St Francis of Sarawak (SSFS) performed a cultural presentation at the Church of St Mary of the Angels.
The Friars of the Order of Friars Minor from the Custody of St Anthony had invited the Sisters to join in the Triduum celebration from 10-12 June. The Triduum was in preparation for the celebration of 50 years of Franciscan presence in Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei (1958-2008), solemn profession of Brs William Lee, Justin Lim and Derrick Yap into the Order, and the solemnity of St Anthony of Padua (patron of the Custody of St Anthony).
The three nights saw a presentation of the Chinese, Indian and Sarawakian cultures where the Friars are currently serving, that is, in Singapore and Malaysia. On the final night, the SFFS Sisters presented two cultural dances accompanied by traditional music. This form of inculturation gave the parishioners of St Mary of the Angels a broader view of the Church in this part of the region and the involvement of Friars amongst the people.
A thanksgiving Mass was held on 13 June, the feast day of St Anthony of Padua. Minister General of Franciscan Order of Friars Minor Jose Carbello presided over the Eucharist. Assisting him were Provincial Minister Friar Paul Smith and Custos Michael D’cruz, and other religious and diocesan priests. Apart from family members and relatives of the three Friars, a huge crowd comprising the faithful and religious from far and near joined in the celebration.
The evening ended with a grand spread of buffet dinner at the piazza outside the Church.
