KOTA PADAWAN – Following the singing workshop in June, the choirs from different kampongs and housing estates in St Ann’s Parish had been busy practising for Christmas Carolling for a competition at the zone-level on 13 October.
Eight choir groups emerged in the semi-finals from the four zones: Kpg Seratau and St Joachim [12th mile] (Siburan Zone), Kpg Semeba and Kpg Bumbok (Semeba Zone), Kpg Sikog and Kpg Benuk (Penrissen Zone), and Kpg Sira and Kpg Simpok (Padawan Zone).
On 4 November, these eight groups met at St Lukas’ Centre for the finals of the Christmas Carolling competition. Benedict Lo, one of the judges from St Joseph’s Cathedral Parish (Kuching), said that the most important message of Christmas Carolling was to bring the meaning of Christmas, that is, the joy and peace of the Infant Saviour to others.
At the end of the competition, St Joachim was adjudged champions, with Kpg Semeba and Kpg Sira in 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.
In his closing remarks, Fr Moses Yap, the Assistant Parish Priest, said that these three choir groups were given the responsibility to reach out, support and build up other choir groups within their zones, so that every person will improve their singing skills in the kampong choirs.
