KUCHING – As part of the Focus on the Family programme, St Joseph’s Parish Sunday School (Bahasa Malaysia section) conducted a one-day seminar on Family Catechesis for parents of the BM Sunday School Children from St Joseph’s Parish, St Mark’s Church (Batu Kawa) and St Collette (Matang) on 23 February at the Tan Sri William Tan Auditorium, St Joseph’s School.
The aim of the seminar was to raise awareness among Catholic parents on the importance of faith formation in the family and the roles and responsibilities of parents in the faith formation of their children. There were 130 participants comprising parents of the Sunday School children and teachers of the BM Sunday School.
The speaker of the day was Michael Junim, a facilitator on faith formation and marriage enrichment. The seminar covered topics on Introduction on Family Catechesis, Purpose and Content of Family Catechesis, and Ways to Conduct Family Catechesis.
In his talk Michael explained that family catechesis is a continuous process and adult catechesis is the key to faith formation of children and youth. To keep the Word of God alive in the family, the family must be guided to live in faith, hope and charity. Parents are the first evangelisers of their children and they should encourage their children to live in God’s love according to the Gospel by their own example. They should also work together in shouldering the responsibilities in educating their children in their faith.
Michael added that in giving family catechesis, parents play their role as shepherds and build up their family as a truly domestic church. He also reminded parents to foster an understanding of their children’s faith from a tender age and not to wait till they are grown up.
In the afternoon, the participants were divided into groups for a group discussion. Each group was assigned to discuss questions on family catechesis. This was followed by presentations on the outcome of the group discussions.
The seminar concluded with a Mass presided by Fr Joseph Chai.
