BANGKOK – Spiritual Director Fr Augustine Jepy and 26 members and friends of the Bread of Life Catholic Charismatic Covenant Community enjoyed themselves during a retreat on ‘The Eucharist and the Family’ conducted by Archbishop John Ha at the Baan Phu Waan Pastoral Centre (Bangkok) from 7-10 April.
It was a very significant retreat because this is the Family Year of Hope for the Archdiocese and the Covenant Community is called ‘Bread of Life’.
Archbishop Ha explained in great detail the Eucharistic Spirituality of Marriage and the Family. He first pointed out the mounting pressures on the family today and how to overcome these pressures by living the image of God. Because Jesus Christ restored our lost image of God, we are able to face up to the negative aspects of globalisation, individualism and loss of sense of God.
“Jesus Christ sealed the new covenant of love. Marriage is the covenant of love between a man and a woman sealed in Christ,” said the Archbishop.
All the retreatants were urged to put into practise Jesus’ commandment of love, thus living the image of God.
“A good marriage and family with the fruit of love, modelled on Christ’s love for the Church is a memorial of Christ crucified, risen and made present. It is a domestic church worshipping God in love and in truth,” the Archbishop added.
The retreat was accompanied by signs and wonders. There was no reference to the daily readings when the theme and dates were selected. The Community was pleasantly surprised that all the Gospel readings of the week were on the ‘Bread of Life’ (Jn 6). A brother left his sling bag on the chair of the public gallery of the Bangkok airport for two hours. When he returned it was still there with passports and money all intact. Another brother had a high fever at midnight one day. After prayers he completely recovered in the morning.
