BETONG – Although it was raining most of the way, Betong was blessed with fine weather on the afternoon of 10 May when Archbishop John Ha graced the earth-breaking ceremony for a new Catholic Church.
Over 200 people attended the ceremony. About 70 members from the Bread of Life Catholic Charismatic Covenant Community from Kuching were present to start the ceremony with a session of praise and worship.
The earth-breaking was done in traditional kampong style – with changkols (hoes). Archbishop Ha expressed his gratitude to the State Government for providing that piece of land for the construction of the new Church. He also thanked the architect, engineer, Government officials in Betong and the Community for expediting matters and getting the land ready for construction. Everyone was then treated to a Ngajat dance by the ladies, and entertainment items by the Sunday School children, which was followed by a time of fellowship.
The Betong Catholic community desperately needs a Church for Sunday worship and other activities such as Sunday School and catechism. The estimated cost for this building is RM 1.7 million. So far, the community has only raised RM 150,000 and is appealling for contributions to help build the Church.
